With urban underground utility work, the challenge is how efficiently you can do it within the tight confines of a modern city. The Vermeer VXT400 vacuum excavator is engineered specifically for this urban jungle, balancing a lightweight footprint with heavy-duty performance.
At its core, the VXT400 is a productivity powerhouse. It features a 4,131 cfm airflow and an 18 inches Hg vacuum, powered by a 370 or 430 hp engine depending on the configuration. What truly sets it apart, however, is its versatility in weight management. With spoil tank options ranging from 8 to 12 cubic yards and a dry weight starting at just 32,500 pounds, it allows contractors to maximize their payload while remaining compliant with weight restrictions.
One of its standout innovations is the side-stow boom, which keeps the dig tube connected during transport. This minimizes setup time at the job site, allowing crews to begin work almost immediately upon arrival. Additionally, the dual-digging capability enables two operators to work simultaneously, effectively doubling the output on time-sensitive projects.
While the VXT400 is a jack-of-all-trades, its low-profile design (standing at approximately 11 feet, 6 inches) allows it to navigate areas with low-hanging tree canopies or power lines. The 330-degree boom rotation and 25-foot reach make it ideal for potholing in crowded city streets where truck positioning is limited. For horizontal directional drilling crews, it provides the necessary suction to manage drilling fluids efficiently, keeping the site clean and the project on schedule. From cleaning out catch basins to exercising valve boxes, the machine’s 3,000 psi water pressure and quiet operation make it a good neighbor. It can be equipped with optional winterization packages, including heated waterlines and cabinets.
“We designed these vacuum truck models based on years of customer feedback and lessons learned from our previous hydrovac equipment,” says TJ Steele, product manager for Vermeer MV Solutions. “The VXT400 brings together the reliability contractors need with the performance to handle demanding jobs. It helps contractors move more material, finish more jobs and work in more places.”
Whether you are navigating the regulatory hurdles of the highway or the physical constraints of a downtown alley, the Vermeer VXT400 is designed to move material fast and get the truck back on the road even faster.
