We seem to have a day set aside to celebrate everything these days. Do you know we’re about the experience Chocolate Cupcake Day? And in a few days the follically challenged get to celebrate Bald and Free Day, where they are encouraged to leave their wigs at home.

Obviously, many of these commemorations are tongue-in-cheek and kind of silly. But there’s nothing silly about Global Handwashing Day, set for Oct. 15. If you take a look at the Global Handwashing Day website, globalhandwashing.org, you’ll see the efforts are aimed at improving sanitation in developing countries. But I think this is also a time where you can stress the importance of clean hands with your portable restroom customers.

I have always thought some sort of hand-cleaning option should be a standard feature for all restroom orders. I never understood, for instance, how a construction contractor could, in good conscience, rent a restroom for a building site, but not include a hand-wash sink or hand sanitizer for the workers who use it. I am hopeful for a day when every unit will leave your yard with one of those upgrades ordered by the customer.

Take the time to stress the importance of clean hands with your customers over the next week. Tell them about Global Handwashing Day and explain how you would like to do your part at home to stop the spread of germs and disease. Maybe you could even offer free hand-wash products to select customers this week to commemorate the day.

As professionals in the portable sanitation industry, you can make a difference in encouraging customers raise their standards of service for the good of all restroom users.
