Preventive maintenance

Contractors know that keeping their critical heavy equipment in peak operating condition is key to avoiding downtime on the job site, which leads to missed deadlines, upset customers, cost increases, and potential financial penalties.

Routine inspections and preventive maintenance programs are important to maintain uptime and reduce overall operating cost, which helps contractors maintain high on-time job completion rates, positive brand reputation, satisfied customers and fewer contractual problems.

The importance of regular maintenance

Daily pre- and post-operations heavy equipment inspections are essential to safe, productive job site operations.

Routine safety inspections to ensure horns, lights, seatbelts and backup alarms are working properly will help keep your work sites safe and reduce accident damage.

Daily inspections

One of the best heavy equipment maintenance routines is a daily walkaround to check for machine damage, wear and tear, proper tire inflation, battery health, and fluid levels or leaks.

Daily maintenance checklist

After each use of your hydrovac or vacuum truck:

  • Inspect all safety equipment, guards, gaskets, hoses, etc.
  • Check oil levels in blower or fan engine, hydraulics, transfer case
  • Drain, inspect and clean all air/water filters, micro-strainers and Y-strainers
  • Inspect for proper functioning of vacuum relief valves
  • Inspect inlet head and inlet boot seals
  • Inspect and clean all door seals
  • Drain air tanks and silencers
  • Inspect cyclones for excess material
  • Check rear door seals daily

In addition, trucks require weekly or monthly grease service to maintain their overall health, including:

  • Hose reel pivot, hose guide, extensions and shaft
  • Driveline joints
  • Debris body mounting hinge
  • Rear door lift cylinders, locks, pivot points and hinges
  • Level indicator
  • Small door hinges
  • Hoist cylinder pins and brackets
  • Boom gear

Recommended daily maintenance and grease service should be outlined in the equipment manual, and in most cases, on the unit itself.
