Weekly Flush: Man Sets Fire to Grandmother's Trailer, Hides in Septic Tank

Did you hear the one about the guy who set fire to his grandmother’s trailer home and hid from police in her septic tank?

Deputies from Escambia County, Florida, say the man set multiple fires inside of the trailer. A K-9 unit later found him hiding in the septic tank behind the home.

He was arrested, charged with burglary and arson, and his bond was set at $28,000.

DEQ Involved After Residential Septic Is Improperly Emptied

A woman in Cleveland County, Oklahoma, recently found some kind of sludge in her yard that she mistakenly assumed to be leaking crude oil. When she called the local oil company, though, the company’s supervisor visited the site to find her yard flowing with human waste.

Further investigation revealed the woman’s neighbor had improperly emptied her septic tank, causing liquid waste to flow downhill to the property and into a drainage ditch. It even found its way into the water supply, meaning the Department of Environmental Quality got involved.

“DEQ received a complaint on the issue in Newalla yesterday,” the agency said in a statement. “DEQ staff went to the site upon receiving the complaint and determined a violation had occurred and issued the septic system owner a warning letter. The discharge had ceased by the time our staff arrived on site.”

Florida Septic Truck Driver Killed in Crash

In a heartbreaking story out of Orange County, Florida, a septic truck driver was killed Dec. 18 in a crash on State Road 520, according to the state patrol.

Authorities say the driver, Robert Ratliff, 25, was killed after the septic truck hit a Chevy Camaro that was parked on the shoulder of the road. The driver of that vehicle has been asleep in the back seat.

The septic truck rolled over and ejected Ratliff, while the sleeping man suffered minor injuries in the crash.
