Pennsylvania onsite installer hurts the cause of system maintenance

It's OK to leave a tank go 18 years without pumping and inspection, he says.

In a recent news article published at www.triblive.com in Pennsylvania, a source purported to be an experienced onsite system installer said of periodic septic pumping, “This three- to five-year stuff is crazy.’’

The story outlined how state Department of Environmental Resources rules mandating three- to five-year septic tank inspection and cleaning are being ignored in Murrysville, Pa. Without enforcement, the local mayor questioned whether the rules were important, and a man who said he installed and repaired systems for 20 years didn’t support the rules. According to the story, installer Bob Whiteside called the regulations “crazy.’’ He reported to the local city council that he hadn’t pumped his own tank in 18 years and it’s still working properly.

With supposed friends like this, the pumping industry doesn’t need enemies. Environmental protection officials and credible septic system experts from across the country agree that periodic pumping and inspections both help protect the environment and lengthen the life of these critical and expensive treatment systems. I’m bewildered when I hear someone claiming to be an expert and saying maintenance is not necessary.

For the sake of the environment and the well being of septic system owners and their neighbors, we must continue to drive home the point that maintenance is, indeed, important. We can’t allow uneducated comments like these go unanswered.
