Paul Becker and Danielle Lee Shannon took an unusual path into the restroom rental business.
Most operators start with standard plastic units and later step up to luxury trailers. Becker and Shannon started Peninsula Privies with trailers and plan to stay within that niche, taking care of weddings and other upscale private events around their home base at Sturgeon Bay in Door County, the peninsula known as “the thumb” on the map of Wisconsin.
In 2025, they bought two custom-built trailers from Comforts of Home Services. A 12-foot-long unit has one stall on each side; an 18-foot model has three stalls for women and one stall and two urinals on the men’s side. Both are tricked out to look like small cottages.
“They have nice painted wood siding and custom cedar steps that are very sturdy,” says Shannon. “We put real porch lights on them. Planter boxes with real flowers cover up the wheels. We did a lot of research before we started this. We wanted to set ourselves apart. We can’t find another company nearby that has the look that we do.”
They saw the Comforts of Home trailers at the 2025 WWETT Show in Indianapolis and were drawn by the opportunity to order custom features and create unique units. The manufacturer prides itself on industrial-grade luxury trailers designed for outdoor events that require a distinctive restroom experience.
They are spacious and accommodating; the aim is to have party guests feel as if they are using bathrooms in a lavish residence. Trailers are built to enable optimal service and efficiency at affordable costs. Materials are chosen for both appearance and durability against the elements.
Units are built from the ground up instead of one-size-fits-all stock templates. That gives the company and customers full control of quality and broad design flexibility. Company personnel continuously test new features and materials and use American-made components whenever possible. Units are handicapped accessible and can be made ADA compliant.
Multiple sizes and configurations are available, ranging from 8-foot single-stall trailers to 12-stall units up to 32 feet long. Features can include low floor height, large waste tanks, rooftop air conditioners (13,500 Btu), heat strips (5.600 Btu), and visual tank level indicators.
Amenities can include wash basins with timed faucets, porcelain RV-style water-saving toilets (one pint per standard flush), mirrors, linoleum floors, powder-coated toilet partitions, urinal privacy screens and LED interior and exterior lighting.
