At just 18 years old, while still in college, Kiran Deck built a successful window and power washing business from the ground up. But after graduating and trying a 9-5, the entrepreneurial itch returned.
In this episode of Pumper Cast, learn why Deck decided to cash in his savings and pivot to a capital-intensive industry: portable restroom trailers. He shares his journey about the unique, low-risk business model that allowed him to jump in headfirst and grow his company, Platinum Potty, based in Austin, Texas.
Sell first, buy later
Deck's entire framework is built on a powerful concept: sell a long-term job first, then buy the trailer to service it. He uses this strategy to secure revenue before making a major capital investment, significantly reducing his risk.
He also details his modern marketing approach, using targeted Facebook ad campaigns to generate a steady stream of event leads, and explains how he cleverly subcontracts work to a larger company to handle overflow and build relationships.
In less than a year, Deck has grown Platinum Potty, to three trailers, with two already on profitable long-term contracts. He candidly discusses the biggest hurdle facing his growth — securing financing as a new business — and what he's learned about the industry's seasonality, even in a booming market like Austin.
