Helping veterans, contributing to his community and physical fitness are values dear to Steve Melton’s heart. He and his wife Robin are the owners of Melton’s Septic Pumping Service in Summit, Mississippi.

Melton likes to show his support for veterans by giving them a discount on services. And one of his employees, Darrin Long, is a veteran currently serving with the National Guard. Long will soon be deployed for a year, but he’lll still have a job when he gets back, Melton says. “It’s not easy having an employee who works for the National Guard,” he says. “You have to be very flexible.”

One of Melton’s community activities is serving on the school board. He and his wife have two children, Lylian, 14, and William, 12. He also coaches his son’s baseball team. And, as a big believer in physical fitness, he teaches kettlebell classes at a local fitness center.

“A kettlebell is a weight you swing. It’s designed to help you get stronger, leaner and lose weight,” he says. “It’s a strength and conditioning tool.”

Melton is also the director of operations for Crime Stoppers in Amite County, and serves as joint director for several other counties in conjunction with the Pike County director. One function of Crime Stoppers is administering
a tipster reward program.

“If the sheriff’s department calls us and says we’ve got a tip on a crime, we give them an amount, and once the tip comes back as a good one we pay out.” The program is funded with a $2 fee added to misdemeanor traffic violations. It’s intended to encourage whistleblowers to come forward in an effort to apprehend lawbreakers and cut down on crime.
