Jim Meagher Was Dedicated to the Pumping Profession Until His Death at 101

For Jim Meagher, dedicating himself to the pumping industry wasn’t something he had to try, it was just the way he was.

Jim Meagher was actively pumping and attending Massachusetts Association of Septic Pumping Contractors (MASPC) meetings right up until he passed away earlier this year in July. What’s extraordinary about that, is that Meagher was 101 years old.

“Jim was still answering phone calls right up to 100 years of age,” says Dick Mottolo of Service Pumping & Drain, and longtime friend of Meagher. “There’s not too many people that can match Jim’s longevity and commitment to our service profession.”

Meagher served in the U.S. Airforce as a flight engineer as a young man before meeting his wife and raising a family in Rutland, Massachusetts. He and his wife, Betty, started Rutland Sanitation Services and operated the business for over 50 years.

Along with running the business, Meagher was still actively attending and participating in MASPC meetings. “Jim always attended the meetings with his son, Tom,” Mottolo says. “He came to every meeting and got a good meal and glass of wine. He was a real gentleman. Kind of a quiet guy but he ran a really good business. He loved the business.”

To commit to something that long shows a dedication rarely seen in any industry and something that according to Mottolo can only come from true passion. “It’s like a lot of things in life. You either have a passion for it or you don’t. And when you don’t, it’s obvious,” Mottolo says. “But Jim was interested, and he had the passion for it.”
