Weekly Flush: Septic Tank Failure at Slaughterhouse May Have Caused E. Coli Outbreak

A septic tank failure at a slaughterhouse in Grainger County, Tennessee, that recently was raided by federal agents could be the source of an E. coli outbreak in some local wells.

The slaughterhouse company Southeastern Provision is being investigated after 97 undocumented immigrants were discovered working at the plant. The owner of the company is accused of paying them in cash to avoid taxes.

However, it also was discovered in March that a septic tank used to store the plant’s wastewater had failed. The owner says he’d planned to haul sewage to a Greeneville treatment plant, but city officials say the plant wouldn’t accept the waste because it was contaminated with E. coli on three separate occasions.

Now, officials from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation are testing wells in the area, and they’ve found a half dozen with E. coli present.

Here’s a heartwarming story out of Lowndes County, Alabama. An elderly woman recovering from back surgery recently got a free septic tank installation thanks to the efforts of the Department of Public Health, Alabama Onsite Wastewater Association and the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board.

A neighbor had complained to the health department about sewage from the woman’s house running onto his property. The complaint turned out to have some merit, as it was discovered she had a positive outlet carrying waste directly from the house into the woods without a septic tank.

When she was directed to buy a septic tank at a cost of $5,000, she said she had no money and was recovering from back surgery. A worker at the health department was inspired to try and secure a free septic tank installation for her.

“Ms. Spivey just had back surgery, and she just looked at me and said ‘I don't have the money.’ For the first time in my 40 years with the health department, I asked could Ms. Spivey receive a free system, and the answer was yes, and she was approved on the same day,” the health department worker tells WSFA News.

If you’re here for something a little more offbeat, we’ve got you covered. You're probably not familiar with the hardcore punk band Septic Tank, but they’ve apparently been making music since the '90s. However, they hadn’t ever recorded an official album until their debut "Rotting Civilisation" was released this month.

If you’re into this sort of thing, and you’re looking for an anthem to blast in your truck on your way to the next pumpout, check them out. They’re … actually pretty good. Here’s a jam they wrote called — you guessed it — “Septic Tank.”
