DropBox Aims at Tough-Job Construction Market

Sanitation Station from DropBox is available in 20-foot and 40-foot units.

Sometimes contractors don’t want to send their restroom trailers to take on the long-term punishment dished out on an industrial construction site. Or the demands of a typical restroom trailer may strain the site’s water and sewer capabilities. That’s where the Sanitation Station from DropBox Inc. steps in.

DropBox developed the product after a utility company asked for a durable, self-contained unit that could withstand the rigors of a long-term power plant rebuilding, says Ryan Mitchell, business manager.

“They were tired of trailers on wheels,” Mitchell explains. “They knew we were into container modification … so we decided to build a commercial-quality, running-water restroom inside an ISO (intermodal) shipping container — something that would withstand a lot of wear and tear, and wouldn’t tax the site’s water and sewer facilities.”

All Sanitation Stations are 8 feet high and wide, and come in 20- and 40-foot lengths. DropBox can customize each intermodal unit to meet specific needs for sinks, toilets and urinals — even co-ed facilities, Mitchell notes.

“We build only what the customer is looking for,” he says. “We specialize in tailoring basic floor plans to fit customers’ needs.”

The shipping containers are made of Corteen steel, a rust-resistant alloy that can withstand exposure to harsh elements — including salt water — on the open seas. They can be painted in virtually any color scheme a customer wants. Each unit also comes equipped with a 1,500-gallon freshwater tank and a 1,500-gallon wastewater tank, Mitchell points out.

A fully outfitted, 20-foot-long container weighs about 9,500 pounds, and a 40-foot-long unit weighs about 14,000 pounds. A crane or multiple forklifts can unload and load the units, Mitchell notes.

Inside, the turnkey, ground-level unit features a Rhino, skid-resistant floor covering, full-height stalls and urinals, utility sinks, heating and air conditioning, and dual-locking access doors.

“After it’s delivered, all that a restroom operator has to do is hook the unit up to an electricity source, bring in freshwater and start pumping sewage,” Mitchell says. “It provides the equivalent of 30 to 50 portable toilets, depending on the configuration.”
