First of all, thanks must go to the people who responded when the girl fell into the septic tank. Their quick response saved the day.
This incident and several others like it in recent years underscore the need to inspect every septic tank lid you encounter on the job, whether they are made of plastic or concrete. Examine the condition of the lids for deterioration in concrete or warping, cracking or other damage in plastic models. Make sure plastic lids can be secured adequately and are as childproof as possible.
Don’t walk away from or cover up any lid you think could pose a problem in the future. Impress upon customers that new lids and risers are a small investment to make to ensure safety.
