Don’t follow this ridiculously stupid advice

Keep educating the public about the dangers of hydrogen sulfide gas

A survivalist about to be featured in an episode of the National Geographic Channel’s Doomsday Preppers reality show shared an unbelievable piece of advice you can read here:

Johnny O, as he’s called, suggests that in the event of an attack on a nuclear facility, residents should crawl into their septic tanks and pull the lid over them. In the story published today, he explains that the methane gas in the tank will probably make you vomit, but the concrete walls will protect you from the initial blast

Protect you from the blast? You’ll likely be killed by hydrogen sulfide gas inside the septic tank before being exposed to any radiation. Johnny O claims to be an environmental scientist and wetlands specialist, yet he has no ideas of the dangers inside a septic tank.

We’ve lost a number of pumpers in the past few years who’ve been overcome by fumes inside a septic tank and died in tragic accidents. And too many people are ignorant of just how lethal the atmosphere is inside a septic tank. To give this “survival’’ advice—and then broadcast it in the news media—is wildly irresponsible.

We as an industry provide an important public service by reinforcing a safety message concerning the dangers of entering a septic tank without proper personal protection equipment. Please make this critical point in your customer education efforts.
