How often does proper septic system maintenance turn up as a topic in a syndicated newspaper advice column? Not often, I would guess. And not often enough, I would add, based on stories I hear about homeowner abuse of septic systems.
So when “Barbara in Iowa’’ wrote to the Hints From Heloise column this week to ask about putting antibacterial cleaners down her drains, it’s an auspicious event and one worth blogging about. Her question and the answer from Heloise was published in newspapers across the country on Sunday. Take a look at it here:
Way to go, Heloise, for helping Barbara understand that excessive use of household cleaning products can cause problems for a septic system. A reduction in the number of emergency calls pumpers receive could be directly related to the frequency with which proper system maintenance is discussed before such a widespread audience.
