BACTERIA/CHEMICALS

AQUAFIX Qwik-Zyme L

Qwik-Zyme L from AQUAFIX is a grease degrader that incorporates three types of fat-degrading biocatalysts to provide dramatic hydrolysis of FOG. The biocatalysts speed the breakdown of complex fat molecules into simple short-chain fatty acids, which can help lower phosphorus. This is not a bacterial product, but rather a high-tech saliva that degrades FOG, allowing bacteria to eat it. It is designed to degrade a range of fatty acids such as oleic, steric and palmitic, as well as fish oils, triglycerides, milk and animal fats. It is a suitable grease degrader in sequencing batch reactor, wastewater treatment plants, equalization tanks, and food and egg processing plants. 888-757-9577; www.teamaquafix.com.

Century Chemical Bio-Snake Blocks

Bio-Snake Blocks from Century Chemical are designed to reduce pumping time, as well as U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and health department complaints, and can reduce effluent BOD levels by up to 80%. The time-release formula contains bacterial spores that digest grease and turn it into carbon dioxide and water. One large block is the recommended dosage for a 500- to 1,000-gallon grease trap and will last for approximately four weeks. Following the initial application, conduct a follow-up in two weeks to gauge the success of the initial application and determine what works best for that specific trap. For traps larger than 1,000 gallons, one large block per 1,000 gallons is recommended. 800-348-3505; www.centurychemical.com.

DRAINBO drain and grease trap treatment

DRAINBO drain and grease trap treatment uses a seven-strain bacillus formula, along with derivatives of corn, coconut and citrus, to digest buildup and FOG in the complete system. When added into the drainline leading to the trap or interceptor, it will digest the buildup in the lines, eliminating backups and slow drains. Once it reaches the trap/interceptor, it breaks down and digests FOG and other proteins in the trap to ensure peak performance. Regular treatments will reduce and eliminate line and trap deposits, control odor and reduce overall maintenance/pumping time, according to the maker. It is noncorrosive and safe to use in any environment. 877-372-4626; www.drainbo.com.

Ecological Laboratories PRO-PUMP/DGTT

PRO-PUMP/DGTT (Drainline and Grease Trap Treatment) is a liquid, high-count culture consortium from Ecological Laboratories for commercial effluent drainlines and grease trap systems. It is pleasantly fragranced and designed to work on contact to degrade line and trap deposits and control odors. It can be applied manually through drains or using a pump dosing system. According to the maker, regular use can help eliminate odors, clean drainlines and benefit receiving wastewater systems. 800-326-7867; www.propump.com.

Jet Inc. BIO JET 7 Plus

BIO JET 7 Plus from Jet Inc. is a nonhazardous and nontoxic bacterial aid designed to degrade FOG, fatty acids and lignin while lowering BOD, COD and nitrates. When added to a system, its bacteria attack the grease and organic materials, converting them to liquid and then to carbon dioxide and water. Continuous use decreases odor, maintenance and emergency blockages, according to the maker. 800-321-6960; www.jetincorp.com.

J&J Portable Sanitation Products Evergreen grease trap treatment

RootX Grease-X

Grease-X bioenzyme from RootX uses natural microorganisms designed to break down and digest all types of greases, fats and heavy oils that collect in sewer systems. The specially selected mixtures of live microbes, along with the enzymes they secrete, are suited to digesting FOG and other organic matter as it enters and flows through the sewer lines. The microbes adhere to the sewer line walls. In digesting organic waste, they reproduce and form colonies that continue to consume accumulated FOG. It is safe to use and won’t hurt any type of pipes or the people installing them, and it can be used on garbage disposals, floor drain or grease traps. Regular application can help prevent the buildup of FOG in sewer systems. 800-844-4974; www.rootx.com.

Typically installed under the counter, grease separators come in a variety of sizes for flows of 20 to 100 gpm, allowing time for the warm liquid grease to separate, cool to solid form and collect for removal. They combine a proven oil/water separation process with a light, noncorrodible, durable and easy-to-maintain interceptor. They are easily installed in commercial kitchens in restaurants, cafeterias, motels, hotels and other businesses where food is prepared. They are designed to eliminate more than 95% of the fats and oils from loaded wastewater. 800-753-3278; www.biomicrobics.com.

Wieser Concrete precast concrete grease interceptors

Precast concrete grease interceptors from Wieser Concrete remove grease from the waste stream to bring the water to acceptable standards before discharge to a sanitary sewer system. The grease interceptors are easy to maintain and large enough to hold considerable amounts of grease to allow for sufficient retention time. The outdoor-type grease interceptors provide acceptable effluent quality. They are produced to provide a healthy restaurant environment and to be watertight, durable during storage and transportation, and easy to install. 800-325-8456; www.wieserconcrete.com.
