Dogs & Cats

Overheard Online - A contractor planning a treatment system repair for a kennel looks for tips to break down a different breed of waste.Any tips for treating animal waste at a kennel? Question: I am designing a repair for a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International kennel. There’s much I don’t know, so perhaps some of you can answer some questions for me. I understand the need for sediment and silt control, and for greater retention time to allow for dog waste breaking down more slowly than the human variety. I am not sure how much retention time to allow for. I am also considering aeration to speed up decomposition before the ATU. What form should that take? The kennel uses calcium hypochlorite for disinfection. It is pretty common as a means of killing bacteria after treatment, but how do I neutralize it to prevent it killing the good bugs in the tanks and ATU? My last question is, what is a good number for a design flow? I have three from three different agencies, and they range from 5 gallons per animal all the way to 50. I am inclined to go big anyway, but it would be nice to get some more accurate numbers.

Do Not Disturb

Reader Pipelines - Contractors share tactics they employ to preserve the landscape after an invasive septic system pumpout or repair. It’s a dilemma: You’re there to keep your customer’s property from becoming a real mess from a backed-up septic tank, but sometimes to get to the tank you have to drive over their lawn with a heavy rig and maybe dig up the ground to gain access to pump or repair. What’s a conscientious pumper to do? The days of getting away with the old “suck and scram” are over. Homeowners are spending more time and money landscaping and making their properties look beautiful. It’s no surprise they’re becoming less tolerant of a contractor who comes in and leaves a big, ugly mess behind.

Classy Truck of the Month

Classy Trucks - This month we feature Dillard’s Septic Service of Annapolis, Md.Dillard’s Septic ServiceAnnapolis, Md. James and Renee Dillard witnessed an extreme makeover, pumper-style, when they had their beat-up 20-year-old Chevrolet C70 from Lely Manufacturing beautified recently. James Dillard’s first service vehicle was totaled in a rollover crash in 2005. When an inspection turned up no damage to the Chevy 366 gasoline engine and 5-speed transmission, frame and Masport pump, and little damage to the steel tank, the couple decided to fix the sentimental favorite vehicle. With new maroon paint from Dave Parsons Painting, striking graphics by Tomorrow of Annapolis and some new accessories, the truck looks like a brand new retro- pumper. The truck is still functional with the 2,300-gallon tank and repair work by A & D Truck Services, Woody’s Truck Repair and A.H. Miller Welding.

Cant Have One Without the Other

Septic System Answer Man - Like love and marriage, pressure distribution and mound systems go together like a horse and carriage.Question: Why is pressure distribution so necessary in sewage treatment mounds? In some cases the septic tank could flow by gravity to the mound, but we have to install a pump according to state code. I don’t think it’s right that we have to increase the price of the sewage system just because of a code provision.
