Since I took over the presidency of the National Association of Wastewater Technicians in June 2012, the association has been busy. Of course, that's not to say there is ever a slow time for our organization. Our education programs have generated more interest than ever before. We are constantly looking to improve the programs and take them to new state groups and industry professionals.

We are always looking for more member benefits and ways NAWT can help our industry grow and sustain itself into the future. Our industry is ever changing – from new regulations to new technology – but by being involved, we, as an industry, can help shape regulations and provide the training needed to stay ahead of the curve and be professionals.

Jeff Rachlin, as NAWT vice president, has been and remains an active member of the Pennsylvania Septage Management Association and has always gone above and beyond to help PSMA in its endeavors. Jeff has done an excellent job keeping committees on track and has new ideas for keeping NAWT the association we all love and are proud to be a part of. I know that as president, Jeff will lead NAWT to new highs just like past board members and presidents have. Jeff will need our help and support to take NAWT to new levels and keep it as the "boots on the ground" association for our industry.

NAWT scholarship

This year NAWT decided to try a different approach with the scholarship application process. Rather than just writing a scholarship essay, applicants were assigned to create and design a slogan or a bumper sticker representing NAWT and a synopsis of why they thought NAWT should choose their slogan/bumper sticker.

A number of well-received ideas and designs were submitted. Here were a few of the slogans that were received: Why NAWT?, Knowledge That Every Drop Counts, Wastewater... is NAWT a Joke, NAWT Trained? and A Better World With NAWT. The Scholarship Committee met to evaluate and score all the submissions, according to the policy and procedure criteria, and a person was selected as the recipient of this year's William Hapchuk Memorial Scholarship. Next month we will share details of the winning submission.

Remember to make a donation to help promote this scholarship fund. Any amount, however large or small, is greatly appreciated. Your gift makes a difference in the life of a student who receives this scholarship. If you have an idea for a scholarship question for next year, we would love to hear from you. We are always looking for new ideas or questions to ask the future scholarly industry leaders.

Spring into continuing education

Spring is here and it's time to get the continuing education units you need. Check out our website for the most current education opportunities. Recently, NAWT introduced a new course called Principles of Septic System Design and it was a great success. This is a course created by NAWT because people like you in the industry requested it. Let us know if you think there is a topic worthy of course material. Also, if your state association has an upcoming conference, there is always the option to have NAWT educate on one of the existing nationally accredited programs or possibly create and design something unique to meet the regulations and requirements of your state.
