WISCONSIN

Group Disputes Septic-Related

Death Numbers

Deputy Fire Chief John Andersen with the Chippewa Fire District stated in Wisconsin newspapers that eight to 12 residents die in septic tanks each year. Members of the Wisconsin Onsite Water Recycling Association believe the actual number is much lower.

Andersen’s quote was part of a news report about an 82-year-old man who, while doing repairs on his septic tank, fell head first down the riser and drowned. The trade association asked area media to follow up and review the statistic and stress septic tank safety.

Board member Bill Bergh did a follow-up interview with the newspaper, advising people to keep the tank covers locked and encouraging them to let licensed professionals do maintenance. WOWRA offers brochures on how to maintain onsite systems and advising people never to enter a septic tank. Call 608/256-7757 for more information.

ONTARIO

Farmers Won’t Kill Their Livelihood

The spring newsletter of the Ontario Association of Sewage Industry Services reports that the province has established the Nutrient Management Science-based Standards Committee to develop nutrient standards for farms. The committee was formed after complaints to a township resulted in a resolution seeking support to change the regulatory framework for land-applying biosolids.

The Ministry of the Environment administers land application, tests soil to recommend the quantity to use, and monitors nutrient loads. Farmers must follow strict guidelines to apply biosolids. Citizen groups claim biosolids are contaminating their wells, making them and their animals ill, creating odors and harming soil to the point where earthworms are dying. No-till farmers who land-apply say their earthworms are thriving, and scientific evidence has yet to substantiate any of the accusations. n
