Homeowner education takes center stage during SepticSmart Week.

Welcome to the third annual SepticSmart Week, an outreach initiative supported by the EPA, which runs Sept. 21-25. The goal of SepticSmart Week is to encourage homeowners to learn more about their septic systems and how to care for them, which is something pumpers, septic installers and inspectors can all appreciate.

Nearly one-fifth of American households depend on a septic system, yet probably a small percentage of those homeowners understand what they’re dealing with. Education can solve a host of issues that you deal with every day. If your customers aren’t “Septic Smart,” do them (and yourself) a favor and participate in this week’s activities.

If you don’t already have some sort of program in place to get information to your customers, the EPA’s SepticSmart Week webpage has a lot of great resources that can get you started. There are homeowner-targeted materials you can download, print and distribute to your customers. There are also press releases and infographics you can use, and suggested social media posts with links to more information that you can use on your own social media pages on each day of the week. (There are also versions of most of this information in Spanish.) There are even some ideas on how to get information out to your community as a whole. Or simply post links to the SepticSmart page on social media.

For social media posts, use the hashtags #SepticSmart and/or #SepticSmartWeek.

As the SepticSmart Week webpage states, encouraging your customer base to learn about and care for their systems means fewer failed systems, less well and groundwater contamination, and fewer risks to public health and the environment. And fewer headaches for you. Education opportunities are easy this week, so take advantage!
